Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is Limewash?

Limewash is a natural, mineral-based paint made from crushed limestone that has been mixed with water and natural pigments. It creates a soft, matte, chalky finish with beautiful depth and subtle movement.

Unlike traditional paint, limewash soaks into the surface rather than sitting on top, giving walls a timeless, textured, Old World look.

At Decor Mondo, we offer premium limewash finishes designed to bring warmth, character, and elegance to modern and classic interiors alike.

2. What surfaces can limewash be applied to?

Limewash works best on:

  • Plaster

  • Brick

  • Stone

  • Cement

  • Drywall (with proper primer)

For smooth, previously painted drywall, a mineral or bonding primer is required before applying limewash.

If you’re unsure whether your surface is suitable, contact us and we’ll guide you.

3. How do I apply limewash?

Applying limewash is simple but requires a specific technique:

Step 1: Surface Preparation

  • Clean the surface thoroughly.

  • Apply a recommended primer if needed.

  • Allow primer to fully dry.

Step 2: Mix the Limewash

  • Stir thoroughly before and during application.

  • Add  20% water in first coat
Add  15% water in second coat (follow product instructions).

Step 3: Apply the First Coat

  • Use a large masonry or limewash brush.

  • Apply in criss-cross or “X” motions.

  • Work in small sections to maintain a wet edge.

Step 4: Apply the Second Coat

  • Allow the first coat to dry (typically 4–6 hours).

  • Apply the second coat using the same technique.

The textured movement develops as it dries.

4. Do I need a special brush?

Yes. For best results, use a large, natural bristle masonry or limewash brush. This helps create the signature movement and soft cloud-like effect.

Rollers are not recommended if you want the traditional limewash look.

5. How many coats are required?

Typically, 2 coats are recommended for full coverage and depth.

Porous surfaces like brick may require additional coats.

6. Is limewash durable?

Yes. Limewash is:

  • Breathable

  • Mold-resistant

  • Naturally antibacterial

  • Long-lasting

It ages beautifully and develops a soft patina over time.

7. Can limewash be used in bathrooms or kitchens?

Yes, but it should not be applied in direct water-contact areas (like inside showers).

In high-moisture spaces, proper ventilation is recommended. A protective topcoat can also be applied if needed.

8. What makes limewash different from regular paint?

Unlike acrylic or latex paint, limewash:

  • Penetrates the surface instead of forming a plastic film

  • Creates natural tonal variation

  • Is eco-friendly and low VOC

  • Develops character over time

It offers a more organic and architectural finish compared to flat paint.

9. Is limewash environmentally friendly?

Yes. Limewash is made from natural limestone and is low in VOCs. It is one of the most environmentally friendly wall finishes available.

10. How much coverage do I get?

Coverage depends on surface texture and porosity.

On average:

  • 1 gallon covers approximately 150–300 sq ft (2 coats)

Always consult the product description for specific coverage details.

11. How long does limewash take to dry?

  • Touch dry: 1–2 hours

  • Recoat time: 4–6 hours

  • Full cure: Up to 7 days

Drying time may vary depending on temperature and humidity.
